• Out of total Enrollment, only 8%-10% of the scholars manage to complete the Ph.D. program in time.
• Apart from course work scholars are forced to foot expensive bills for their mentors, take classes on their behalf and even may be abused & harassed.

Acquiring a degree and acquiring knowledge are not the same. A PhD or Doctor of Philosophy signifies the highest degree of academic qualification, and is meant to encourage original research to yield new insights in one’s area of interest or study.
The main component of a doctoral dissertation is the research question and identification of the research gap. Gap identification ideally takes anywhere between two to three years and is the result of an exhaustive review of existing literature.
In India, the life of a research scholars can be lonely and hard, becausenobody knows how many problems a student faces in the process of earning their doctorate.
In this article we will look at why completing a PhD is the most difficult task in India.
Lack of Professional Guides

Research guides are both the mentor who can support and facilitate the emotional processes; and the patron who manages the springboard from which the student can leap into a career. Students are dependent on them for everything from financial sanctions, networks and guidance.

If you do a Ph.D. in India, the guide should be someone who should lead you towards the path to completion. Unless the scholar has a passion for research and unless the guide has the mental aptitude to guide the scholar, the entire experience of working for a doctoral degree faces numerous challenges. The moment a student’s doctoral degree becomes dependent on a guide, ego intervenes, and that resulted in most guides lead their doctoral students into a rabbit hole. Out of the total number of enrolments in a doctoral course, only 8%-10% of the scholars manage to complete the program.

Students Forced to do Unproductive Things

In state-run universities, many guide torture scholars by asking them to do their personal work, like booking tickets for his/her family vacation; carrying home-cooked food for him visiting banks and post offices, being made to take on additional work, or even offer bribes.

Therefore, scholars will end up losing valuable time which needed to spend on research which will result in delaying the completion of the degree by two to three years. On most occasions, a doctoral degree produces a halo effect that is temporal in nature.” Unless the individual pursues his passion for research, the doctoral degree becomes a full stop.

Higher Fees

Imagine scholars completing a doctoral degree in 4 years. Yes, you heard it correct, there are universities that have made a mockery of the doctoral program by (literally) selling the degrees.

Private universities have amassed huge sums of money in the form of fees. While the total cost of pursuing a doctoral degree in a state university is somewhere between Rs2 lakh and Rs4 lakh, Private universities charge anywhere between Rs5 lakh and Rs.7 lakh.

Many PhD students work on scholarships, usually available only for a certain period of time. So, there is a need of competent co-operation from their guides to finish majority of their work before their scholarship ends. Strangely none of the Indian universities seems to have a feedback mechanism for evaluating the capabilities of their doctoral program guides. Most students drop out even before the course work is complete, and universities end up with loads of cash.

‘Rigorous’ process to choose PhD topics

Generally, in India, the topics were not decided by the candidate or the guide alone: The choice involves a rigorous process that takes into account the views of a number of people.

The topic first goes to the Board of Research and Board of Studies at the university in question, then for endorsement to the School Board and Faculty Committee at each institution. It then goes to the academic council, which includes teachers and experts. It is only at the end of this process that the PhD topic is passed and the candidate begins work.

Repetitive Research Topics

Research is about offering something new, not offering old wine in a new bottle. The Western world is years ahead of us in terms of path-breaking research. In India, despite having skilled people, we end up succumbing to the lure of selecting patently absurd topics for research.

As per the investigation by ThePrint of Ph.D. topics between 2010 and 2017 — in humanities and pure science — across Indian universities shows that topics are often hyper-theoretical without much empirical studies or historical without any contemporary currency.
